RIVERSIDE PUBLIC UTILITIES AWARDS DESIGN/BUILD PROJECT FOR NEW WATER TREATMENT PLANT

6/11/2007

Riverside, CA – Riverside Public Utilities has awarded its first design/build project for a new $17 million water treatment plant.

The design/build contract, awarded to the firm of Pascal Ludwig working with Tetra Tech, will allow the plant to be constructed and operational in only 14 months.

Part of the City’s “Safe Water Plan,” adopted by the Board of Public Utilities and the City Council last year, the new treatment plant will expand the Utility’s locally generated water portfolio by 8,000 acre feet per year (an acre foot is approximately 326,000 gallons, or about the amount used by an average household in one year). It will treat water pumped from wells located in the Riverside North Basin.

Riverside’s Master Plan has identified a need to provide up to 20,000 additional acre feet of water by the year 2025. “This is the first step in allowing us to achieve this goal,” said Riverside Public Utilities General Manager David H. Wright. “Additionally, this is another step in reducing the need for any (more expensive) imported water,” Wright said.

The project will include a Zenon membrane micro filtration system, booster pump station, and disinfection system and is scheduled to be operational to meet demands by summer 2008. Funding for the plant includes an $8.5 million grant from the State of California, Department of Health Services.
