WATER TREATMENT PLANT WINS REGIONAL DESIGN-BUILD AWARD

6/2/2010

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Riverside Public Utilities’ John W. North Water Treatment Plant won the Design-Build Institute of America’s Western Pacific Region Award for Best Project in the Water Industry last week.

The treatment plant in Grand Terrace, just to the north of Riverside, has been delivering water to city’s system since late 2008, treating well water near the Santa Ana River previously used for irrigation.

By using the latest filtration technology, the $17 million plant adds to the city’s drinking water supply by 10 million gallons a day – 10 percent of the city’s supply.

“The design-build delivery method allowed us to get the plant up and running a year earlier than expected,” said Todd Jorgenson, water operations manager for RPU. “The plant has provided a clean and reliable source of drinking water to the City of Riverside for almost two years.”

Design-Build is a method in which one contractor provides both architectural design services and construction services.

“I think the city’s founder, J. W. North, would have been proud,” said RPU General Manager Dave Wright. “He was a pioneer of the Inland Empire and this facility is a pioneer in its own right. I think we were right to make it his namesake.”
